It’s getting cold out! Take some time to give your roof a pre-winter check-up with these three steps.
1. Check your attic to make sure it has the proper ventilation. If not, moisture can build up and lead to mold, mildew, or ultimately rot and structural degradation.
2. Clean out your gutters, and remove debris from the roof. Don’t let leaves, tree branches and other detritus gather on your roof. This keeps unnecessary moisture on the roof and blocks gutters, which keeps the rain and melted snow from flowing off the roof.
3. Avoid ice dams by taking some preventive steps. Ice dams build up when snow melts, runs down the roof and refreezes near the edge. These occur because of varying roof temperatures – warmer in some spots and colder in others. To prevent the dams, aim for the same temperature throughout the rooftop. Increase attic ventilation, add insulation and seal off all leaks. This will help distribute the heat and even out your roof’s overall temperature.
